Bengo4.com, Inc. (Minato-ku, Tokyo; Taichiro Motoe, Representative Director, President and CEO, Lawyer; hereinafter, the “Company”) announces the release of a new AI Case Analysis feature for Bengo Kakumei, a digital document support tool for lawyers. The new feature is an advanced AI analysis feature specifically designed for case analysis and litigation strategy planning.

This feature goes beyond merely digitalizing and organizing case records. It structurally organizes factual relationships, examines contradictions and discrepancies between documents, extracts evidentiary gaps, and even presents new perspectives to aid strategic planning. By performing these tasks holistically, it supports the AI transformation (AX) of legal practice in an era of advancing courtroom digitalization.

■ Background and Purpose of Development

As the IT-based digital transformation of court proceedings gains momentum, with the digitalization of case records*1 and the expansion of online procedures, the digital shift in legal practice work is rapidly advancing. Despite this, the work of deciphering factual relationships, organizing connections between documents, and translating them into litigation and defense strategies still relies heavily on the experience and memory of individual attorneys, and entails massive amounts of time.

Consequently, the traditional work style persists in practice, where significant time is consumed by reading and organizing case records. This creates a structural issue, in that the benefits of digital data are not being leveraged in the core tasks of analyzing arguments and evidence, or in strategy building.

Given the current legal practice environment, where court proceedings are being increasingly digitalized, the Company believes that the use of AI should not be limited to merely digitalizing and organizing documents more efficiently. The Company recognizes that expanding the role of AI to support the very thought processes of lawyers—such as in understanding cases, identifying potential points of contention, and developing strategies—is crucial for future practice.

Based on this vision, the Company has developed and integrated a new AI Case Analysis feature into its Bengo Kakumei document utilization tool.

*1: “Case records” refers to the complete set of materials (paper and electronic data) relating to a case handled by a lawyer, including documents received from clients, submissions to the court, and evidence, etc.

■ What Is the AI Case Analysis Feature in Bengo Kakumei?

The AI Case Analysis feature is an advanced analytical feature that uses AI to analyze key documents within case records to directly support lawyers’ strategic deliberations. It not only summarizes and organizes documents but also structurally reframes factual relationships, highlighting contradictions and gaps to provide multifaceted support for lawyers in their deliberations.

1. Structuring the overall picture of the case

The AI extracts and integrates the factual relationships recorded in the case files to present a case summary. This allows for a quick overview of the case’s overall structure and key points of contention. It also organizes content with date/time stamps chronologically, supporting intuitive grasp of the flow of events in the case.

2. AI infers factual relationships and fills in gaps

The AI extracts key contradictions and discrepancies between documents and testimonies that could influence factual determinations.

At the same time, it organizes periods not clearly evidenced and facts where parties’ memories are vague. It then infers and displays hidden factual relationships that remain blank within the records. It directly presents crucial clues for case resolution.

3. Suggesting evidence and perspectives for strategy development

Based on extracted contradictions and gaps, the AI presents objective evidence likely to be beneficial for clarifying facts, supporting consideration of directions for additional investigation and substantiation activities. By analyzing facts from different angles without being constrained by existing arguments or organizational frameworks, the AI presents perspectives lawyers may not have considered, aiding in the development of litigation and defense strategies.

The AI functionality of Bengo Kakumei is designed for use within a robust security environment, assuming handling of highly confidential case information.

The feature internally utilizes Gemini, hosted on GCP Vertex AI, or Claude, hosted on AWS Bedrock. Legal practice-grade security is ensured by establishing systems where input/output data is not used for training at either external service providers or the Company, minimizing data retention, encrypting communications, and enforcing strict access controls.

■ Statement from Bengo Kakumei Developer and Attorney Ryosen Yamamoto

“Lawyers are human too. When tackling difficult cases, our perspective can narrow, and there are limits to what we can notice. The AI Case Analysis feature is an intelligent AI feature designed to overcome these limitations. It expands our professional capabilities, enabling lawyers to better serve their clients.”
